# MFS and Barclays: accounts, facilities and disputes

**Question.** Which Barclays roles are established, and what remains disputed?

**Answer.** Barclays provided banking services across the MFS network and participated in funding structures. Account freezes, fund ownership and lending exposure are separate issues, with competing accounts of cause and recovery.

## Operating accounts and wider lending

- Analysis: The administration reports describe roughly 250 accounts operated through MFS, including accounts belonging to funding vehicles, and around £13 million in accounts in the company’s own name. Reported references to more than £160 million held across parts of the network concern a wider perimeter. Barclays exposure estimates of about £500 million and £600 million come from differently dated accounts of the collapse, rather than one established loss. [s-d43] [s-d69] [s-d154] [s-d31]
  - Qualification: Group stakeholders assert proprietary or trust interests; the estate’s entitlement and realisable value remain unresolved. The figures describe different measures and dates from other creditor estimates; they are not interchangeable with cash held or a final loss. The sentence does not isolate the exact debtor or contractual scope of the £600 million exposure.
  - Response: The report states Barclays would defend the account-release case; other administrators attributed its refusal to fraud allegations, freezing orders and the bank’s own possible claims.
  - Outcome: The Part 8 account-release claim and competing proprietary claims were ongoing at the progress report’s date.
- Analysis: Individual mortgage vehicles held their own Barclays accounts, and some financing documents assigned account-bank and collection-account roles. Trident’s deed identifies Barclays as account bank and an MFS collection account held on trust for the issuer. Banking services and an account bank role do not establish that Barclays was the direct lender for every mortgage vehicle. [s-d225] [s-d31]
  - Outcome: Legal collection-account trust mechanism documented; actual application of every borrower payment is not proved.

## Freezes, recovery and competing explanations

- Analysis: The MFS administrators’ Part 8 claim seeks access to eleven accounts and recovery of debited sums. Group participants asserted proprietary or trust interests in the balances. Other reports describe vehicle-specific transfers or blocked requests, which should not be treated as a final decision in the MFS company’s own claim. [s-d69] [s-d154] [s-d173]
  - Qualification: Group stakeholders assert proprietary or trust interests; the estate’s entitlement and realisable value remain unresolved. The figures describe different measures and dates from other creditor estimates; they are not interchangeable with cash held or a final loss.
Separately, Trident’s administrators reported a 23 April 2026 order requiring transfer of the vehicle’s cash by 8 May 2026. Recovered funds were excluded from the receipts-and-payments statement pending financial-crime checks; the OCR amount is unclear.
- Analysis: Raja argues that Barclays’ payment freeze precipitated the collapse and says about £145 million was held in accounts. Barclays said it acted in accordance with its legal and regulatory obligations, and attributed the alleged fraud to MFS and Raja. The bank’s reported £500 million exposure and expectation of recovering more than half are distinct from the earlier £600 million estimate cited at the administration hearing. The retained record leaves MFS’s account claim and the competing causal positions unresolved. [s-d183] [s-d236] [s-d217] [s-d154] [s-d31]
  - Qualification: This is an attributed account in the retained reporting, with the stated procedural and source limits; it is not a determination of the underlying contested allegation. The figures describe different measures and dates from other creditor estimates; they are not interchangeable with cash held or a final loss. The sentence does not isolate the exact debtor or contractual scope of the £600 million exposure.
  - Response: Barclays said it acted throughout in accordance with legal and regulatory obligations and attributed the alleged fraud to MFS and Raja; Raja contests the administrators’ attribution and arithmetic. Barclays said it acted in accordance with legal and regulatory obligations and alleged the fraud was caused by MFS and Raja. Raja’s account is his contested defence. The report states Barclays would defend the account-release case; other administrators attributed its refusal to fraud allegations, freezing orders and the bank’s own possible claims.
